２０日の東京株式市場は大幅反落している。日経平均株価の午前終値は、前日比１０４円９１銭安の１万００５５円４９銭。 日経平均株価で２３７円高となった前日の株価大幅上昇の反動で、利益確定売りが優勢となった。前日のニューヨーク株式市場のダウ工業株３０種平均が９８ドル下げたことも影響した。日銀の金融政策決定会合の結果発表を待つ様子見ムードもあった。 序盤に下げ幅を４４円まで縮めて１万０１００円台を回復したが、その後は値下がり基調が続き、下げ幅は１００円を超えた。 東証株価指数（ＴＯＰＩＸ）の午前終値は、前日比２．７７ポイント安の８３６．５７。出来高は概算で１７億４６７３万株。売買代金は８９８８億円と旺盛な取引が続いている。東証１部銘柄の騰落は値上がり６３４、値下がり８９０、変わらず１６３。 売買代金上位は三菱ＵＦＪ、野村ホールディングス、シャープ、みずほＦＧ、三井住友ＦＧまでが２００億円超。さらに日産自動車、トヨタ自動車、キヤノンと続いている。 前日、人気ソフト次回作の発売延期により業績大幅下方修正を発表したカプコンは前日比９．６％安まで下げ幅を縮めたが、午前終値段階まで値下がり率トップが続いた。

６５年連続出場していた日体大は、実に３０年ぶり１０度目の栄冠をつかんだ。
ゴール直前、ユニホームに染め抜かれた「日本体育大学」の文字を突き出したアンカー谷永雄一（４年）。「強い日体大がここにいるんだぞ、と見せたかった」と誇らしげだった。前回は１９位。予選会からの総合優勝は、１９９７年の神奈川大以来１６年ぶり２度目の快挙である。
前日の往路は１～３年だけの若い構成で優勝。しかし、復路では４年が好走した。１０区の谷永に加えて７区の高田翔二、８区の高柳祐也と全員が区間２位の安定した走りで首位を守った。古豪復活を成し遂げた背景には、体育会の“鉄のおきて”とされる年功序列を覆した荒療治があった。
惨敗に終わった１年前の大会直後、別府健至監督（４６）は主将を新３年の服部翔大に任せることを決めたのだ。
これに４年が反発。埼玉栄高の１学年先輩でもある高柳は「悔しいし、恥ずかしいし、納得できないと監督に直談判に行った。でも、お前たちには力不足だといわれて」と振り返る。
実は、服部の父・重夫さんが前月に肺がんで死去。その事実を伏せたまま、服部は悲しい表情も見せずに１区で２位と責任を果たした。別府監督から伝え聞いた高柳は、打ちひしがれたという。
「自分たちのことばかり考えていた。恥ずかしくて…」
その後、４年だけのミーティングを開催。「俺たちが周りを見返すには、結果で服部を支えて存在感を示すしかない」と年下の主将の指示に従うと決めた。
最上級生の意識改革なしには、復活はなかったのかもしれない。別府監督は「３年のキャプテンを４年がしっかり支えて、この１年本当に頑張ってきた」とねぎらった。
また高校駅伝の伝統校・西脇工の前監督で、昨年４月から招かれている渡辺公二特別強化委員長（７４）も「心をつないだ勝利だった」と称賛した。
